Nizam army

The Nizam Army was a combination of number of different military forces commanded by the Nizam of Hyderabad. Three different groups were commanded by three different independent commanders. Nizam, Diwan, and an important officer in Nizam's government called Shangal Umara or "Amin Kabir" maintained their own separate forces.
In 1892, Nizam signed a subsidiary treaty with the East India Company regarding military aid. After this treaty Nizam did not show any interest in his own army. At that time the army operated under an alternative name, the Sharif-E-khas. When the time Nizam Army participated in the war with Maratas, the army's inability and indiscipline were evident throughout the campaign.
In Diwan's army, different types of soldiers were enlisted. Among these groups were Arab nationals who migrated to the Deccan. Later, Muslims from Audh, Sindh, Balochistan and the surrounding areas in North India also played an important role in Diwan's army. They are called as "Rohollas". Other battalions within Diwan's army were called line "Walas". Diwan's army was supplied by Europeans for the security of Nizam.
==Russell Brigade==
In March, 1811, the East Inda Company sent Sir Henry Russell to India as a residing interest for the company there. When he joined as resident in Hyderabad, he had identified that the situations in the rural areas were inhumane. Law and order was in disarray, and Russell decided that Nizam was not an able ruler. Pindaries, Bhils and local Zamindars had been behaving like thieves and were stealing from the people of Hyderabad. However, the use of European troops was highly restricted according to the treaty that Nizam had made with the East India Company. The European armieswere meant to be deployed by the East India Company for the purpose of protection of Nizam only. So Russel decided to create new battalions for an effort to improve the situation in Hyderabad. In 1816, the British Government agreed to this and allowed Russell to form his own brigade, known as "Russell's Brigade" or "Russell's Army". Later, Russell's Brigade became the Hyderabad contingent.
